Miu Miu

Miuccia founded Prada's little sister brand, Miu Miu, in 1992 in Milan. The brand is named after Miuccia's childhood nickname to honor a more childlike version of herself. Its style is modeled after her wardrobe; Miu Miu is a label that Miuccia does not have to think too hard about, more instinctual and immediate than Prada. Miuccia says of the brand: "Prada is very sophisticated and considered; Miu Miu is much more naïve." It's playful and fun, evoking a sense of youthful rebellion and coquettishness in its early campaigns starring a young Drew Barrymore or Maggie Gyllenhall. Kate Moss starred in Miu Miu's first collection in 1995, and the brand became an instant hit. Miu Miu has an ongoing sustainability project called Upcycled by Miu Miu, which celebrates the beauty of mending and reviving old clothes. They restyle preloved denim in partnership with Levi's, focusing on 50s workwear and adorning it with embroidery, patches, and sequins. This project blurs together masculine and feminine fashion divisions of old, crafting a future where the past is both honored and reimagined. Memory lives on within clothing, and Miu Miu seeks to protect both that intangible beauty and our environment's genuine and fragile beauty, which is threatened in part by the fashion industry. Though it perhaps looks different from the thigh-high leather Miu Miu boots worn by Madonna in 2004, this project is its form of rebellion, a cause for today's youth.
